Can You Use Spray Paint With Resin Art? Try These 3 Methods

Artists all around the world have been using spray paint for years to create their art, and the same goes for resin.

They both take various techniques and lots practice to perfect, and they are used to get different styles of art, but can they be used together?

Can you use spray paint with resin art? Spray paint can be used as a color additive for custom coloration when initially mixing the resin, it can be used on top of cured resin, and it can be used to create an artwork before applying a resin finish. Each method gives a unique style to the art piece.

How do you mix spray paint with resin? Which spray paint is best to use with resin? How do you ensure you get the best result when painting over resin?

You’ll find the answers to all of these interesting questions and more in this following.

How To Use Spray Paint With Resin Art

Resin is an amazing medium to use as it is quite easy to handle, and you can use it to get many different styles in your art.

Resin is usually clear and does require a color additive, but this has the added benefit that you can make resin almost any color that you would like.

This is one area where spray paint can come in, but you can use spray paint with resin in various different ways.

  • You can use the spray paint as a color additive to color the resin.
  • You can spray paint a design and then put a clear or slightly colored or textured resin over the spray paint art to give it a unique style.
  • You can spray paint over the resin to create a beautiful piece of art.

Each use of spray paint with resin adds a different dynamic to your resin art.

You may be able to get spray paint in a color that is not available in other resin color additives (discover the best resin pigments here), which could give your resin art a rich and beautiful color that not many other resin artworks have.

You can create different textures when using spray paint on top of resin, which could bring a whole different dynamic to your art.

Using resin on top of spray paint can create a ‘glass’ look and can help the colors pop out more, making your art look vibrant.

Using spray paint with resin is something that all resin artists should try at least once as it is incredibly fun to play with, and you can get unique results that may even surprise you.

What Type of Spray Paint To Use With Resin

There are so many different types of spray paint out there; how do you know which one is the right one to use with your resin?

Well, resin is actually considered to be a type of plastic, so you need to ensure that you get spray paint that is made to be used with plastic.

You should also ensure that your spray paint is of good quality to get the best results.

Otherwise, the spray paint may form clumps in the resin, which is not to everyone’s taste unless you are looking for that style, of course.

To use spray paint as your color additive in your resin, you can use an epoxy spray paint which is easier to mix as it contains epoxy resin in it already, such as Rust-Oleum.

You can also use a spray paint that is made for plastics, like Krylon Fusion. Both of these options have a large variety of colors for you to choose from.

Mixing Spray Paint With Resin

Mixing spray paint into resin is not too difficult, but it does require some preparation as it can be a bit messy.

For this process, you should set up a space outside where you can mix the spray paint with the resin.

You should place some newspaper down outside or put a plastic sheet on the ground so you do not get spray paint everywhere.

This also helps to protect the environment a bit as you are not letting chemicals soak into the ground.

Once your space outside is prepared, you can mix your resin.

If you’re not sure which type of resin to use, head over to this article for an explanation and recommendations.

Make sure that you read and follow the instructions on the resin so that you mix it correctly.

Once your resin is mixed, place some into a cup and take it outside to your spray paint section.

Ensure that the nozzle of the spray paint is pointing into the cup of resin, and then spray about two to three short sprays directly into the resin.

The amount of spray paint required will depend on the amount of resin that is in the cup.

You may require a bit more spray paint to get your desired color if the cup is quite full.

Once you have sprayed the paint into the resin, you need to stir it immediately as spray paint is made to dry quickly.

Ensure that you mix the paint in thoroughly so that the resin is fully saturated with color. Now your freshly colored resin is ready to use in your art.

Using Spray Paint on Cured Resin

Painting resin with spray paint can be a bit tricky as painting resin is very different than painting wood or painting on a canvas.

This is mainly because paint does not cling to resin very well.

Luckily, there are a few tips that we are going to go through that can help you get the best outcome that you possibly can.

To ensure that you get a good result, you need to begin with a primer before you use the spray paint.

Primers generally come in three colors, black and white, and gray (which is more difficult to find).

Therefore, you need to choose a primer color based on the color that you are painting the resin.

For example, if you are using lighter paints, then you should use a light primer.

You should apply at least two layers of primer and then let the primer dry completely before you try to paint over it.

Ensure that you are only applying the primer and spray paint while you are in a well-ventilated area as the chemicals are quite strong.

You need to use a spray paint that is made for plastics to paint on top of resin, as this will cling a bit better to the primer.

You still need to be as careful as you can so as to not to scratch or touch the paint while it is trying to dry, as it can smudge very easily.

Always make sure that the spray paint nozzle is directed at the resin and nowhere else; safety must come first.

Using Resin Over Spray Paint

Placing a coating of resin over spray paint art is fairly easy to do, and it does add quite a bit to the art piece.

Adding the resin to the art seals it nicely, which protects it and increases the durability of the art.

It also adds a glossy sheen that makes the spray paint colors pop, and it creates a professional-looking finish to the art piece.

So, once your spray paint art piece is completed and dry, you need to mount it to a stable object.

For example, if your art is on cardboard, you should stick it onto a nice piece of wood to ensure that it is stable and will not fold or break when the resin is poured.

Then you need to spray your art with a spray sealant as this will ensure that the resin does not damage the art piece.

While the sealant is drying, you can mix your resin in a well-ventilated area.

Then pour the resin onto the center of your art piece and spread it out to the edges by using a craft stick or plastic spreader.

You’ll need to use a small torch (this culinary torch is the perfect size) or heat gun (this one is designed specifically for resin art) to get rid of any bubbles that may have formed.

To do this, you should hold the flame a few inches away from the resin and keep the flame moving at all times, moving over the bubbles.

You’ll find tips on preventing and correcting air bubbles here.

Be very careful with this particular part of the process as it is an open flame!

Then you need to ensure that there is no dirt or hair stuck in the resin.

Next, you cover the art piece with a cardboard box or a plastic tote and let it dry for 24 hours. Once the time is up, uncover the art piece and enjoy the final look!

Conclusion

There are many ways in which you can use spray paint with resin art, and the two together do add a nice look to any art piece.

You just need to be careful not to spray the paint into your own face as you go, but otherwise, these two mediums are great and easy to work with, and they go very well together!
