What Tools Does a Beginner Blacksmith Need?

If you are wanting to get into the world of blacksmithing, but aren’t sure where to start, you’re not alone! Are you wondering about what tools you’ll need and how to create your first project?

A forge is a great place to start because it will be the source of heat you will use to create your tools.

So, what tools do you need to get started in blacksmithing? A forge is key, and building one will help you create more tools as you go. The other tools you will need are an anvil, a vice, a hammer, and tongs. These tools will help get you started, while the forge will help you make any other tools you will need to complete other projects.

I’ll explain how to build your forge, where to find the tools that you’ll need to build one, and go over vital tools that any blacksmith can use for multiple projects.

It may cost between $300-$500 depending on where you get your tools. It can be a lot upfront, but you’ll save money once you’re creating your own tools.

What Tools Do I Need?

A great “starter kit” for a beginner blacksmith includes a forge, an anvil, hammers, and a metal workbench.  Let’s take a quick look at each one.

A Forge

A forge allows you to create tools that you can use for everyday activities.

There are multiple ways you can come across one. You can buy a used one from someone or make your own (it’s easier than you might think).

An Anvil

An anvil is a great base to provide resistance to the metal you’re using to create various tools. They are shaped appropriately and work perfectly when you start blacksmithing.

You do not need an antique anvil to get the right size. You can purchase a brand-new anvil, which will work just as well.

“Blacksmith” Hammers

You’ll want a light one and a heavier one. Get cross pein hammers with hefty, sturdy handles.

You don’t need a top-quality hammer, so don’t go spend money on those. You can get a $5 hammer at a garage sale, and it’ll work just fine.

A Metal Workbench

A wooden workbench is great for your other projects, but when you are setting your heated metal down, it can set the table on fire.

So, make sure you have a metal section on your workbench or atop your forge so you can let your metal rest safely.

How Do I Build A DIY Forge?

Don’t feel overwhelmed; it’s really not that hard at all. Just follow this easy, step-by-step guide.

  1. To start, you’ll need to build an enclosure. You can use bricks or even dig a trench in your backyard. You can use whatever you like to keep the fire contained.
  2. Find or buy an anvil to set your heated metal on. If you don’t have an anvil, you can use a large stone or slab of concrete. If you’re building smaller tools, like a knife, your anvil doesn’t need to be large. Buying a smaller anvil will also be easier on your wallet.
  3. Then you’ll need to create your heat source. You can use a propane forge or use wood scraps or charcoal. You’ll need a hairdryer wrapped in an aluminum sheet (to prevent melting) to help feed air into the flames and keep the fire going if you’re not using a propane forge.

You can use a hacksaw if you want to create a more elaborate forge. The hacksaw will help cut out pieces of metal if you’re creating your own forge to transport to various locations.

These are great for those blacksmiths who work in various locations or want a more contained forge.

Here’s a detailed video demonstrating how to build a more elaborate forge.

What Can I Make with the Forge?

Home Decor

You can create custom hooks, metals, and tools to showcase your craft around your home while encouraging others to become involved in crafting with you.

Your whole family can join in to bounce off ideas or help you forge various tools and trinkets to decorate your home.

Forging tools makes more elaborate projects easier to complete by creating the tools necessary.

These tools can be tongs, knives, or hammers. This is a great option for those who don’t have many tools on hand and want to save some money.

Custom Gifts

Just because you can make tools for yourself doesn’t mean that you can’t share them with others!

Blacksmithing gives you the freedom to create your own custom pieces. You can give those to others, and they’ll appreciate the totally unique, handmade creation.

If you are looking for ideas on what to make with your forge, turn to YouTube! You’ll find many custom ideas as well as step-by-step tutorials.

These can help inspire you or give you something to try if you want to challenge your skills.

As you get better at the craft, you can also upload your ideas and ways to create custom tools.

What Else Should I Know About Blacksmithing?

You’ll be glad to know that blacksmithing isn’t an expensive hobby to explore.

In fact, buying the necessary tools and learning the ways of blacksmithing is cheaper than popular pastimes like golf or kayaking

You can get the tools you need for around $300-$500 if you buy them used and make the rest of the tools yourself.

Don’t forgo your dream of becoming a blacksmith because you’re worried it’ll be too expensive.

More good news:

  • You don’t need a lot of space to be a blacksmith. A 10 ft. x 10 ft. room is enough for all your tools and the forge. This can be in a garage, backyard, or driveway. Some blacksmiths have their own shops or outbuildings, but that really isn’t necessary.
  • Anyone can become a blacksmith. As long as you have the desire to learn, you can be a blacksmith. You don’t need extensive knowledge or to know an expert. Take online classes or watch DIY videos to teach yourself. Gather the necessary tools, and start creating!
  • Blacksmithing is a great activity for your brain and your body. It is a great hobby to improve mental focus and hand-eye coordination, and it gets you up and moving while working with your hands. It gives you a break from technology and the stresses of everyday life.

Now that you know exactly what tools you’ll need for basic blacksmithing, how useful the craft is, and how to confidently set up your own forge at home, I hope you’ll put your newfound knowledge to work.

Starting is always the hardest step, but the rest is easy and well worth your time. What are you waiting for? Get out there today and get busy creating!
